IAQ Standards & Best Practices Should Change

Michael Witkowski, MEA’s VP, shared his webinar experience on improving indoor air quality

“Recently I sat in on a webinar hosted by Belimo. The webinar was presented by William P. Bahnfleth, PhD, PE, (“IAQ Control for Healthy, Resilient, Low Energy Buildings.”)  The presentation posed the question of whether the current state of affairs will raise awareness and spark the conversation to improve indoor air quality. This is not just about the pandemic, but more about raising the bar on indoor air quality. The presentation noted several approaches to how this can be done. One item that I think could be added: building owners should re-verify their system’s air flow as recommended by ASHRAE 62.1 TABLE 8.2 “Minimum Maintenance Activity and Frequency for Ventilation System Equipment and Associated Components.” This is also an important part of Energy Star certification and LEED’s ARC tracking tool for re-certification.  Its important for building owners to periodically check their baseline.”
